Your personals ad will be the first impression that's made on whoever might later on contact you. So, what to say? Well, that's partly a matter of personal preference. Still there are some basic things to consider.

STEP1: WRITE ABOUT YOURSELF

Be honest when writing about yourself. Try to feel free and confident. People can only know who they'll be contacting from what is written in the personals ad. They'll find out soon enough so why not be direct right from the start? What's the use of getting 1000 responses all with misguided expectations when you can have even just a few who are interested in getting to know the real you?

Save yourself a lot of energy and disappointment by focusing on trying to find singles who are looking to meet someone like yourself and who you're really interested in meeting. There are enough people online that finding a good match is probably a realistic expectation if people know who you really are and what you really want. Some things to consider when writing about yourself in a personals ad:

• Your main goals in life
• Your career/ studies/how you spend or like to spend most of your time
• General characteristics/personality traits
• Unique/important experiences that you have had

These are just some ideas but feel free and write whatever comes to mind. Ultimately what's written in a personals ad and how it is written, probably say more about the writer that she or he knows and that's good! It is important, though, to put in some facts about yourself and your values, goals and interests.

STEP 2: STATE WHAT YOU WANT

When a person knows what he or she wants and asks for it, there's a real chance for a dream to come true or a good match to be found! If you don't state what you want the chances are much, much smaller. One of the great pluses of using personal ads is that singles can actually let other singles know what they are looking for before meeting. This way they save themselves endless hours of being with people that they'll soon be looking forward to forgetting.

• Basic personality traits
• Physical characteristics
